The Story of the Planks

If you can put up with a short, self-indulgent origin story, there's a free desktop background in it for you.

If you've seen the Slugline demo video, or even our screenshots on the Mac App Store, you've seen this 100% artisanal reclaimed barnwood hemp-based organic gluten-free beard-improving desktop background, created exclusively for Slugline. Of course, there's a story behind it.

On December 7, 2011, Clint Torres and I met at one of my favorite Oakland restaurants, Charlie Hallowell's Boot and Shoe Service. By day it's a wonderful café serving delicious food and Fourbarrel coffee. I'd asked Clint there to see if he'd be interested in building a Fountain-based screenwriting app with me. Foolishly, fabulously, he said yes.

Since then, we've snuck references to Boot & Shoe into every nook and cranny of Slugline. The image atop our home page was made there, as was the iPad-typing portion of our plinky-music demo video. And, of course, the reclaimed barnwood planks are from Boot & Shoe's back patio, where the are currently covered by a piano.

After I grabbed the iPad typing shot, I edited it into the video right there, over avocado toast.

A few folks have asked about this image, so we're offering it here as a free download (under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives license, if you must ask).
